Folklore

Described by Sims and Stephens as informally learned, unofficial knowledge about ourselves, our beliefs, our cultures, our traditions, our communities, our cultures, and our world, folklore is expressed creatively through words, actions, behaviors, music, customs, and materials, as well as the interactive, dynamic process of creating, preforming, and communicating that knowledge with others. Female hairstyles and hairdressing in ancient Rome are an example of material folklore, something that can be seen, touched, and worn. The craft is taught and passed on through social interaction and values and cultural knowledge are shared through this process.

WHO is in the folkgroup?

While all of Rome was in contact with this type of folklore, those actually involved in the process were ancient Roman women of high-enough class to have the time needed to sit for hairstyling and the slave women educated in the craft necessary to do the styling.
